India quietly inducts thrid stealth submarine INS Karanj

A great day for Indian underwater firepower. India quietly adds yet another advanced submarine. Indian Navy’s third stealth Scorpene class Submarine INS Karanj has been commissioned today at the Naval Dockyard Mumbai through a formal commissioning ceremony. Induction of the new Scorpene class submarine takes Indian Navy’s conventional submarine strength to a whopping 15. While Indian Navy operates two deadly nuclear powered submarines namely INS Arihant(SSBN) a ballistic missile submarine and INS Chakra (SSN) a nuclear attack submarine.

Major milestone for Indian Navy’s Project 75 as India achieves AatmaNirbharta (Make In India) with indigenous submarine construction at Mazagon Dock.

The Scorpène-class submarines are a class of diesel-electric attack submarines jointly developed by the French Direction des Constructions Navales and the Spanish company Navantia, and now by Naval Group. It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion.

India Singed an exclusive deal to build six Scorpene class French submarine. Out of which three submarines have been inducted so far. The rest of the submarines are expected to be inducted into Indian Navy in a very short span of time. When inducted India will be operating 20 submarine fleet in the region. Only second to the Chinese submarine fleet. Unlike China, Indian Navy’s operational requirements small. The focus is to have credible deterrence against Pakistan and China in the Indian Ocean Region and Arabian sea. While maintaining credible offensive capabilities beyond the Indian Ocean Region. Especially complicated waters in the South China Sea.

These newly inducted submarines can undertake missions like anti- surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance.”The state-of-art technology used in the submarine has ensured superior stealth features such as advanced acoustic absorption techniques, low radiated noise levels, and hydro- dynamically optimised shape and also the ability to attack the enemy using precision guided weapons,” a release by MDL said.

The attack can be launched with both torpedoes and tube launched anti-ship missiles, whilst underwater or on surface, MDL said. “The stealth of this potent platform is enhanced by the special attention to her characteristic underwater signatures. These stealth features give it an invulnerability, unmatched by most submarines,” it said. In an article published last year by EconomicTimes stated.
