Is Belgium getting near herd immunity on Covid-19?

Herd immunity‘, also known as ‘population immunity‘, is a concept used for vaccination, in which a population can be protected from a certain virus if a threshold of vaccination is reached. Herd immunity is achieved by protecting people from a virus, not by exposing them to it. As per WHO official definition for those who are wondering what is ‘Herd Immunity.’

After having reported 20,000+ Covid-19 cases on Oct. 30th, Belgium is now down to 4,300 cases. Positivity rate though still high has dropped from 37 to 20%.

With having now 500,000 total, cases, suppose an 85% concealed rate (e. g. study on Iceland), this translates into 3.35 million cases or 29% of the whole population. So with that, you would expect the spread to slow naturally.

Unfortunately, the lockdown measures came too late when the hospitals and ICUs were already full. So you are now seeing record daily deaths which can stay on a high level for the coming weeks.

Belgium with 1,132 deaths per million has the worst ratio of any populated among Western countries.
