Sudanese army retakes entire border region after battle with Ethiopian forces

A source in the local government of the Sudanese state of El-Gadarif confirmed to Sputnik on Monday that the armed forces had retaken all border areas with Ethiopia, after days of fighting with Ethiopian armed groups in the region.

The source revealed, in statements to Sputnik on Monday that “the Sudanese army was able during the past days to control the areas of Umm Qazzaz, Arrad and Al-Osra, and the last of those areas that the army retook during the past two days are Jabal Al-Burd, Khor Shin and Qalaa Al-Labban.”

During the past weeks, the Sudanese army began to expand in the territories that were under the control of Ethiopian armed groups backed by Addis Ababa for the past 26 years.

The army accused its Ethiopian counterpart and the militias supported by it, of ambushing its members who were combing the vicinity of Mount Abu Tayer last week, causing deaths and injuries on the Sudanese side.

These latest developments come at a time of increased tension between Ethiopia and Sudan, as the former’s conflict inside the Tigray region has created a large number of refugees, who have fled to the latter over the course of a month.
