BASED: India reiterates its support for Argentina in Falkland and might supply Tejas fighter jets

Bilateral relations between Argentina and India, have existed for decades. Argentina has an embassy in Delhi and a Consulate General in Mumbai whilst India has an embassy in Buenos Aires. Both countries are members of G20, Group of 24 and Group of 77.

India, Argentina joint press statement mentions Falkland island issue by the name Malvinas Islands; New Delhi reiterates its “support to the resumption of negotiations to find a solution to the sovereignty issue relating to the Question of the Malvinas Islands”.

Argentina asserted (and maintains) that the islands are Argentine territory, and the Argentine government thus characterised its military action as the reclamation of its own territory. The British government regarded the action as an invasion of a territory that had been a Crown colony since 1841.

India on Friday also acknowledged Argentina’s interest in the made-in-India Tejas fighter aircraft for the Argentine Air Force.

The talks on Tejas featured during External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar’s two-day official visit to Argentina.

During his meeting with Argentina Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero, EAM Jaishankar reviewed the ongoing cooperation in the strategic sectors of Defence, Nuclear Energy and Space.

India and Argentina have reaffirmed their commitment to further deepening and diversifying their bilateral cooperation, expanding it in new domains by broadening their strategic partnership to address global challenges like terrorism and climate change.
